Three Types of Retainers

There are three main types of retainers available. Our orthodontists will help you determine whether you need a retainer after your orthodontic treatment, and which one will work best for you.

Hawley Retainers – Consist of wires and clasps embedded in a plastic body that covers the roof of your mouth (for the upper arch) or lies along the tongue-side of your teeth (for the lower arch). The clasps fit around certain teeth to anchor the retainer in place, while the wire arches across the front of your teeth to maintain their alignment.

Clear Retainers – Made of clear plastic and fit snugly over your teeth. A clear retainer is usually more discreet than a Hawley retainer, although it may not be as durable.

Fixed Retainers – Also called bonded or permanent retainers, fixed retainers are permanently attached to the backside of your front teeth. They prevent your teeth from shifting out of place and can only be removed by a dental professional.

Wearing Your Retainer

It is incredibly important to keep up with your retainer schedule, whether it is wearing it day and night, only at night, or a few nights per week. During the first few months after braces are removed, there’s a high chance that your teeth will slip back toward their old positions if the retainer is not worn full-time. Without a retainer, your teeth will always move and shift. If you don’t follow your retainer schedule, you risk needing braces a second time – and no one wants to go through the time, effort, and cost to do that again.
